Hey,
Kolkata is pretty hot right now, and it’s reminding me of my time in Bangalore and Kashmir…
Well, the Durga Puja vibe has passed, and now it's time to make the most of the remaining 74 days of the year (since today’s the 18th).
Oh, and I rejoined the gym after a 4-month break! (Pic below)
Today, let's talk about one of the key hacks in email marketing that big brands use all the time.
A/B testing.
Here are 10 easy ways to run A/B tests successfully:
1. Test one element at a time
Always test by changing a single variable at a time (e.g., subject line, CTA, or email layout).
This will make it easier to track which change led to better performance.
2. Use a large sample size
Ensure your test group is large enough to give statistically significant results.
Aim for at least 1,000 recipients per variation for accurate data.
I don’t do it because my list is too small.
3. Leverage time zones for split testing
Always run A/B tests across different time zones or peak sending times to analyze when your audience is most engaged.
It will help you to optimize your time in the future.
4. Test subject lines using preheaders
Subject lines are the main reason people open your email, so make sure to spend the most time with it, when you do A/B testing, try to come up with different emotional subject lines.
Also, the preheader text.
A persuasive preheader increases the impact of your subject line.
5. Personalize one variation
In one variation, include personalized elements (name, location, purchase history) and leave the other more generic.
It will help you to measure how much personalization impacts open and conversion rates.
6. Test CTA placement
CTAs are the way to give them a direction for the work you want them to do.
So, place your CTAs in different places, like early in the email, in the middle, or at the end to check which drives more clicks.
7. Run tests for 24 hours minimum
Everything needs time.
Let your A/B test run for at least 24 hours to capture various behaviour patterns (e.g., morning vs. evening readers) for more accurate results.
8. Use dynamic content
In one email variation, implement dynamic content (e.g., personalized product recommendations).
Compare it against a static version to see how much dynamic content boosts engagement.
(Lil secret, dynamic content always works the best)
9. Segment by user behavior
Test different email elements based on recipient behaviour (e.g., frequent buyers vs. one-time customers).
Customize your A/B tests to audience segments for more relevant insights.
10. Optimize based on engagement
If an email consistently performs better with one segment (e.g., mobile users), consider testing different designs and elements specifically for that segment.
There you go!
A/B testing is one of the best hacks when you want to know how your emails are performing. You don't need anything fancy, your ESP has this inbuilt feature.
This is it for today.
